Hospital Services

General Surgery Services

From emergency appendectomies to scheduled hernia repairs, every year thousands of patients throughout Boulder, Weld and Laramie county receive top quality surgical care from general surgeons at Longmont United Hospital. Patients undergoing surgery at the Hospital know it is being performed in a setting well-known for providing compassionate, high-quality care.

The expertise of a general surgeon is wide and ranges from exploratory surgery to diagnose what ails you, to the removal or repair of organs and other tissues. Most general surgeons offer laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgical options and many are also certified to use robotic technology.

General surgeons are also trained in trauma, or emergency surgery. They are capable of dealing initially with almost any type of surgical emergency, but are most often called upon to stop internal bleeding, remove a gallbladder or appendix, correct a bowel obstruction or close a perforated lung or intestine.

Common surgeries performed by a general surgeon include:

  • Anorectal surgery - benign and malignant conditions of the anus and rectum
  • Bariatric surgery - surgery for the gastrointestinal tract to limit how much food one can ingest
  • Breast surgery - all breast disorders and diseases. Procedures include biopsies, lumpectomy or mastectomy
  • Endocrine surgery - benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas and spleen
  • Gastrointestinal/stomach surgery - benign and malignant conditions of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, appendix and colon
  • Hepatobiliary - surgical treatment for diseases of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Hernia surgery
  • Skin and soft tissue surgery - skin cancer excision
  • Thoracic - diseases of the thoracic cavity
