Sleep Disorders

Sleep Disorders Studies...Helping You Get a Good Night’s Rest

What is a sleep study?

Sleep studies help physicians determine if you have sleep disorders. Our sleep study starts in a comfortable bedroom with Sleep NumberĀ® beds. It is a relaxing and soothing environment. A painless, computerized recording device will be connected to you and the diagnostic equipment. The computerized recording will monitor your sleep pattern, heart activity, breathing, and muscle movements during sleep. You will be under observation of the Sleep Technician for a full night’s sleep. After the study is complete, your referring physician will review the results and advise appropriate treatment including mask fitting and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adjustments. Each patient will receive an individualized education plan from the Sleep Technicians.

What are the symptoms of sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders are disruptive to personal and work life, and they can seriously compromise a person’s health. Symptoms of sleep disorders include snoring, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness and unusual or too much movement during sleep. Sleep disorders are diagnosed by linking deep sleep with symptoms.

What are the types of sleep disorders?

The most common sleep disorders are:

  • Sleep Apnea - Sleep apnea is when you have one or more breathing pauses during sleep. Breathing pauses may last from seconds to minutes. When breathing pauses occur, it may affect crucial oxygen levels. It may prevent the person from entering deep sleep.
  • Narcolepsy - These are “sleep attacks” that can not be resisted. They occur in unusual and improper situations despite a full night’s sleep.
  • Nocturnal Myoclonus (Restless Leg Syndrome) - Nocturnal myoclonus are unpleasant sensations in your legs. There is an uncontrollable urge to move your legs during sleep which can be mistaken for insomnia.

Do you need a physician referral to participate?

If you experience symptoms of sleep disorders, make an appointment with your doctor for a consultation. If a sleep study is appropriate for you, a prescription will be faxed to the Cardiopulmonary Department at Longmont United Hospital. The scheduling coordinator will call you to set up an appointment. The Sleep Lab Director is a Board Certified Pulmonary Physician. The Director works with referring physicians to determine medical necessity, review the sleep study results, and recommend appropriate treatment.
