Prostate Cancer - Hormonal Therapy

Hormone therapy (also called androgen deprivation therapy) may be used with other treatments or as a primary treatment to slow or stop your body from producing male hormones. Hormone therapy may act to stop or slow the growth of prostate cancer, and it is often used in men with advanced disease.

There are many types of hormone drugs that your doctor may recommend to cut off your body’s supply of male hormones. Female hormones (estrogens) block the release and activity of testosterone. Anti-androgens block the activity of any androgens circulating in the blood. Still another type of hormone, taken as periodic injections, prevents the brain from signaling the testicles to produce androgens.

Men should discuss the potential benefits and side effects of hormone therapy with their doctors.
